Experimental Film

  1. This piece was particularly enjoyable in the fact that I have absolutely no idea what you were filming. Most of the other videos give visual clues as to what the content was, but with this, I don't know if you're filming a flashlight, a battery, the bottom of a cup, etc, and I find that fascinating. I had to rewatch it a few times because I was trying so hard to figure out what the content was. I like that you kept the color and ambiance the same throughout, that way I didn't get too lost.

If I was being nit-picky, I would say to shoot another angle of whatever it was you were filming, or give some sort of visual clue, even if it only lasted a half a second. In the middle when the white light started flashing, I felt like I was about to have a seizure, so that wasn't too fun, but that's probably just me.

You did a really great job overall!

  2. I'm not confidant on this, but it looks like to me that your using a bottle or glass of water and a flashlight to make some of these interesting effects, with the combination of the light and the natural reflection of the water.

The effects seemed a little erratic at times but at the same time that fit the overall composition and variety in the video.

  3. I really liked your piece for several reasons. One, I liked that you didnt use sound because I dont think your video needed it at all with the high action movement. I also could not tell what it was that you were filming - you didnt give it away in the title or in the video which I thought was an engaging choice. The flashing lights and movements really kept me engaged. It appeared to me that the light was trying to follow something even though no one knows what it is. Lastly, I really liked your use of darkness throughout your piece. It really added a sense of mystery and edge. And the dark transitions you incorporated were also very interesting to me because they were the only moments that really slowed down. Really well done!

  4. Your process is definitely disguised and ambiguous. In omitting audio, I am left to focus solely on the visual components of the film and its rhythmic tendencies. It's a cohesive piece, with smooth transitions and a concentrated image basis. At about 1:23, an abrupt ball of light startles the rhythm of the film and provides an nice change of pace. Well done, SooHoo.

  5. This is a very interesting video. Of all the videos, I am most unsure about what or how you filmed. I really liked the spinning movements and the subtle colors. The abstractness is very appealing but I feel like it is missing something to add more emotion. Overall though it is a very cool video.

  6. TRIPPPYYYYYY.. But I thought that this was awesome, mainly cause I never knew or expected anything that happened. I really like this though, maybe you could add sound, or play with it.

  7. This video was so interesting to me! The flashing light remind me of a search party in a forest or a person looking for something. This video really kept me captivated because of the quick changes and great lights. I like how there was no sound as well. It gave the video an eerie tone. I love videos that have a theme and you captured your ideas well. Great job!

  8. At times it reminded me of throwing clay in a ceramics class, but other times i felt as if someone was in the process of drowning out at sea. i constantly was going back a forth through these too thoughts which was a really cool feeling. it was a strange sensation between relaxation and distress, something i never really have at the same time.

  9. The fast paced movements were pretty intense and kind of abrasive which I actually liked a lot. It was great how you stuck with the same kind of footage entirely though, something few people have done. it offered a nice consistency that surprisingly kept me entertained throughout. good job!

  10. Good work, Chris. All the imagery you have here is really nice. I have to disagree a little with the above statements about how difficult to interpret the images were. I find them pretty legible, though that doesn't take away from their allure. I think the speed is a strength. It feels very similar to the Robert Breer piece we watched (entitled Eyewash, if you want to take a look back at it.) There are several really beautiful moments, like when the light from the LED flashlight starts to be broken into red green and blue, or some of the layered moments when we seem to be looking at the surface of water in a glass. My only issue is that in terms of it's development, it feels a bit flat. There are moments of greater and lesser intensity, but they don't contrast enough to give the piece a larger feeling of shape. I still find myself to be moved by a sense of development and even of drama, and I'm confident that this can be produced even in a fully abstract video.
