I enjoyed this film a lot. I think the music as well as the footage provided a very tranquil viewing experience. This sounds nit-picky, but the first few times I watched it, I couldn't tell if the first shot of the droplets on the bottle was filmed, or if a picture was overlayed. I think it might look better to have some movement/panning going on, like you ended the film with. Also, I really liked the moments when it fades from blurriness to clarity, and think that it would be nice to have a bit more of that in the middle. But once again, those are minor suggestions; I wouldn't change much.
i am really glad you decided to put the music in along with the video that helped it out a lot. The video as a whole gives me the feeling that its raining or sense that i am very relaxed. The song reminds me of a similar song the developers of Minecraft use as the day becomes night, that to me brought a sense of familiarity.
I like the slow build up that takes place during the first half of the video starting with the fade from black to white to the still images. This gives the movement that takes place in the second half a greater impact and a story like progression with an anticipation that finally leads to an interesting climatic point. The music is nice as well, and sets a pace that captivates the viewer.
This was really great. I thought your video was really peaceful to watch and listen to. It kinda picks up a little bit on the video we watched in class of the artist who shot scenes of rain from his back yard. I thought your video flowed really well transitioning from one thing to the next. It was very smooth and well planned out. Your idea also is really original and offered a lot of stuff for you to play around with. Since bottles have kinda of a blurred consistency with the thick glass, I think that really added to what this project was about. My favorite part it when the water droplets appear and flicker on the bottles- this was really beautiful. Well done, and well thought through!
I thought that this was an excellent video. I loved the color choices because they were both calming and work really well together. I also enjoyed the music a lot which fit perfectly in with the rest of the video. The only thing I would change would be to get rid of the first few seconds of blackness in the beginning or add the title to that. This is a really nice video.
The best part of this video was the beautiful colors! The whole video was so harmonious with the soothing colors and music. I loved the bottle theme as well, it made the video very cohesive and I loved knowing what I was looking at though it was abstracted or close up. The water drops were great and the transitions were stunning! It is also very excellent because you obviously put so much hard work into the video and you are definitely very tech savvy! This video makes me excited to see what you do in the future!
the emotions that this video evoked in me were really outstanding. I felt a little sad actually but at the same time quite tranquil watching it. It was very pleasant and calming, which to me was much appreciated. Like Meredith said, you can totally tell you put hard work into this, which is so obvious in the outcome! nice job!
Taylor, sorry I've been embarrassingly slow to respond. This piece is absolutely fucking beautiful. The visuals you captured are mesmerizing, the camera movement is delicate, and the light is magical. It's really sensuous. It's difficult to describe without using too many adjectives, and any description falls flat compared to the experience of watching it. There are a few things to dig at though that might hold it back from being pitch perfect. The editing is very good, but I wonder if it reaches it's peak just a little too early, or at least never quite comes back as strong as it is at the beginning. The most sensuous, shallow focus imagery comes right at the beginning, (the image at 1:10 is so beautiful it hurts) and then fades off into flowing color field abstraction, which is a good move. Then it moves into a more desaturated image field, which gives us a respite from the intensity of the color just before it. The color comes back around 2:20 just for a moment, and this is a good tease, and the glass coming back at the very end feels like a good return to the themes of the beginning, but it feels like it needs something to kind of finish it off. Not sure exactly what that should be, but something with a bit more of the intensity of the early section.
While I respond to the music and the way it fits with your camera movement and editing, I'm concerned that it might be a little too emotionally 1 dimensional. It has a sweet nostalgia to it in image and soundtrack, and I wonder if something a little different for audio might help. I mean, maybe you still use part of this audio (particularly about 3/4 of the way through where it kind of swells), but have some form of audio collage at the beginning to allow the visual to work it's magic on its own. I'm just worried that if there's too much sweetness, it might become kitsch, which could cheapen the intense beauty of the piece. What if you recorded a collage of the sounds the bottles and glass make? This might take it too much into the territory of Leighton Pierce's Glass, but there might be somewhere this approach could lead. I'd also take a look at Brakhage's Text of Light (I believe it's this film, the one where he shoots the refractions through a glass ash tray.)
