Visual Music Film-"Broadcast"

  1. I liked this film overall...I am guessing that we are looking at a computer screen, due to the horizontal lines moving down the screen. One thing that I didn't particularly like was the middle section with the circle effect. I think it would be cool to have filmed other things, and had those moving lines overlayed the entire film, making us question what we are looking at (the filmed screen, or filmed outside world).

  2. I really enjoyed the moving lines, and I like how you kept the whole film connected by splicing them between clips. I agree with Chris, though, that the circle effect got very repetitive after while. If there was another set of clips that you could use (maybe with whatever you used to film the 0:30 - 0:50 range), then it would be more engaging. Good work, though!

  3. The beginning is nice because of the rhythmic beat created by the lines drifting down the screen that sets the pace for the entire video. I'm going to have to disagree with those two up there and say I actually liked the circle effect that was taking place. I like how the circles mingled and collided with one another. The flaw in the effect would be that it was detached from the rest of the video making it seem more like an intermission between two main parts and interrupting the videos overall vibe.

  4. This video was really nice and different from a lot of the other videos in a good/unique way. I liked how images were flashed across the screen in a slideshow-like-way it was a really cool way to transition. It almost appeared like a blurred tv that you were filming- but you made it really beautiful. At one point I felt like I was watching mermaids swim by in the water ha! Its really nicely done because I really like how it allows for the viewer to have his/her own perception due to the fact that there seem to be so many ways that your images can be seen. Really good job!

  5. Ashley,

Rephotographing the screen is an interesting choice. I recognize the horizontal lines as being a result of the screens refresh rate not syncing with the camera's shutter speed. If you want to experiment with this further, you can manually adjust the shutter speed as you're shooting to change the thickness of the lines. Also an interesting choice to draw attention to this technique by leaving the youtube "buffering" animation. I think that this reference to internet video could be really useful if you further incorporate it into the meaning of the piece, but it feels like it's hanging around on its own right now. There is a formal relationship between the rotating circles and the circles that come into play later in the video, and this could be further explored.

To speak to those circles everyone has been pointing out, I think they are the most beautiful moment in the piece, and in some ways the rest of the video doesn't live up to them. The rhythm here is the clearest, with the repetition of what seems to be fireworks (I could be wrong, but what they are is not so important in this case). While I generally am partial to silence in films that highlight the visual, I don't know if the image gives us enough to sustain the piece without some kind of soundtrack. I recommend refocusing the piece, perhaps around that middle section, and should you decide to explore the idea of re-mediation (that is, the qualities of uploading video to the internet and what meanings might emerge from thinking about those issues...I'm thinking of the youtube loading sign) maybe bringing in some other images that some how refer to certain aspects of internet video and the culture around it. It's a beautiful piece so far, it just needs something to support it push it a bit further.

  6. This is a very interesting video but it almost seemed like two separate videos. I liked the first and the last parts where it seemed to be filming a screen and how that ties in with the idea of a broadcast. But I also like the middle part with the circles which were very interesting and calming. However I feel like the two could have been tied together more coherently rather than just a fade from one to the other. I really liked both parts however.

  7. Ashley! This video is so cool. The colors really create a cohesive and I loved the transitions. It created a very nice flow to the video. The circles of light are great! The different colors make me think of the spots you see when you stand up too fast. I love the theme of the video. The flashes of light, they are very visually interesting. Keep up the good work!

  8. Your video has an awesome sense of uniformity. It is both simple and thoughtful. The lines seemed to have a chaotic feeling to them, while the circles seemed more peaceful. The differences created a really nice juxtaposition. I would to see you do something to it that highlights the meaning of the footage if there is any.
