As far as my ideas go regarding project two, I was really intrigued by the artists who played off ebay (for buying inanimate things) and google (doogle). Given this, I would like to create some sort of interactive website where people can search for something and have their search results be comical and/or meaningful. Perhaps a user types in "love" and the location of love is "around the corner" or "in a bag of trail mix". The idea would be like an online 8 ball. What I am struggling with now is how to avoid making it too cliche or maybe even overdone. As of now I will keep brainstorming so I do not run into this problem.

V E R N A C U L A R & P R O J E C T 2
I really enjoyed this reading because I found that the comparisons she was making from 90's web to the current web totally existed in my use of the internet in my life. Rarely do I read about something that actually relates to me in some way. While I didn't actually use a computer in my early life, I did later on and certainly recollect these shifts in old websites and new websites. I definitely like the old school feel of the images she was talking about but that being said , it was pretty much all I took away from this particular reading.

I like your online 8 ball idea, though if you google this I think it may already exist. There may be something similar you can do that gives it a fresh twist though. The 8 ball is a kind of quasi-magical item that contains a little element of mystery. You might take a look at the work of Aspen Mays, who explores this kind of common magic with a kind of innocent wonder. I have to admit, I don't know how to program something like what you're describing, but you might be able to make something simple with Dreamweaver, using roll-over images (you might play with the css "mouse-over" or "hover" functions and have different images that come up depending on what the mouse does. It's been a while since I've done this so I can't remember exactly how it works, but you could try looking up some dreamweaver tutorials and enter "roll over" into the search.) Otherwise you might need to do some digging into java-script on your own. Try to solidify your idea and then look at what you're able to accomplish with what you know, and fill in the gaps of your knowledge as you go. This is the way a lot of contemporary artists work.
ReplyDeleteYou might also take a look at Daniel Everett's projects. He has one that is a series of images using text that resulted from his conversation with a computer program. Rather than building your own application, you could make something utilizing an existing tool, like this piece of Daniel's called Conversations.
